Automaton

An automaton is a clockwork, robotic device made to perform certain tasks without the assistance of an operator. The word automaton is derived from the word automatic, describing the general function of these machines.

Automatons are newer, ground-breaking technology; they tend to be fairly expensive as a rule, but smaller automatons such as the varanius and lodica are already vital parts of Valenthian culture.

Automatons are typically made to resemble animals or people, and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Smaller automatons are powered by miracrystal shards, while some larger devices may utilise steam power instead.

The most amazing aspect of an automaton is its programming; all automatons are hard-coded with specific instructions to perform-- from simple, repetitive tasks to advanced artificial intelligence systems which allow a robot to analyse its surroundings and judge which actions are necessary.

Auto-suits are automatonic suits of armor that can be worn or driven by an organic user. While frequently jerky and toy-like in motion, they provide excellent protection against a wide variety of weapons and dangerous situations. An auto-suit may come equipped with its own methods of attack, such as mounted firearms or oversized melee weapons.

Auto-suits are currently very rare, and those that exist are either prototypes or owned in small numbers by governments.

Automatonic parts are robotic, prosthetic limbs, created to help people regain functions lost due to accident or mutation. These can be quite expensive, though most modern governments and factions are happy to provide them to those who require them and are willing to serve them in turn.

Automatons, auto-suits and automatonic parts are outlawed in Schalle because of the miracrystals that power them.
