Automaton
An Automaton is a clockwork robotic device made to perform some function on its own-- automatically, hence the name.
Typically made to resemble animals or people, automatons come in many shapes and sizes, from the tiny, bird or insect-like lodicas to humanoid models such as Leonardo Alfonsi II.V.
Smaller automatons are always miracrystal-powered, while some larger devices may work on steam instead.
The most amazing aspect of an automaton is its programming; all automatons are hard-coded with specific instructions to perform, from simple and repetitive jobs to more advanced functions-- up to and including artificial intelligence systems, which let the robots judge situations at hand and take appropriate actions.
This is how varani can manage complex machinery and household functions without assistance or guidance from a sentient owner.
Automatons are new and groundbreaking technology; all but the smallest devices tend to be fairly expensive, but the varaniusis already a vital part of Valenthianculture in almost every modern society today.
In addition to full-blown, semi-sentient robots, Auto-suits are automatonic suits of armor that can be worn or driven. While they are jerky and toylike in motion, they provide excellent protection against a wide variety of weapons and dangerous situations, and some auto-suits come equipped with their own methods of attack, such as oversized Swords or mounted Firearms.
Auto-suits are currently very rare, however; those that exist are prototypes, or owned in small numbers by governments.
Lastly, Automatonic Parts are robotic prosthetic limbs, made to allow people to regain functions lost due to accidents or mutations.
These can be expensive for common folk, but most modern governments and factions are happy to provide them for people who need them and are willing to serve their country somehow in return.
Automatons, auto-suits and automatonic parts are outlawed in Schalle because of the miracrystals that power them.
