Despite a dark reputation granted them due to association with vampires and [[Viadante viadante]], gargoyles are not malevolent creatures-- merely simple-minded.
Gargoyles are elementals of both earth and air, and are said to be born from stone that faces the sun. No-one is entirely certain what prompts the transformation, only that any rock is fair game; gargoyles have sprung to life from small stones broken away from mountains as often as from cut and polished granite bricks atop ancient castles.
Gargoyles come in all sizes, and are usually equipped with powerful forearms, massive claws and powerful jaws. Each possesses a pair of great, ornately-decorated wings which-- for reasons no researcher, magician or scientist has ever discovered-- are capable of flight.
Despite their stone physiology, gargoyles are immensely fond of flesh, and will swiftly gobble down any corpse they find, bones and all. They never seem to actively hunt, but are easily swayed by offerings of food.
