The griffin is an iconic species, featuring prominently in Valenthian lore, legends, and heraldry-- particularly in Liasse.
Griffins are strange, composite creatures with the head, forelimbs and wings of an eagle, and the body and hindquarters of a lion.
The oldest of Valenth's myths and legends about griffins describe an ancient race of sapient, magical creatures that make their homes in the clouds above Aensdoun and Liasse.
Little is known about them, but a handful of scrolls bearing the clawmarks of the "Templars of Aqk" have survived the ages in the libraries of Lassenbhurg.
The Lassen Griffin is the most well-known kind of griffin, which is generally found in Liasse, and bred by the mages of Lassenbhurg to serve as mounts in the mage-army.
Lassen griffins are little more than beasts, and are no more intelligent than a horse or other beast of burden.
They were once one and the same as the Ancients; however, vital over-exposure burned away their minds and their magical ability, forcing them to descend to the earth to build their nests in forests or on mountain tops.
These feral griffins were eventually encountered, captured, and domesticated, proving to be very useful mounts to the Lassen-- if sometimes wilful and unruly.
